Why See a Lactation Consultant?

Top FAQs for Expecting & New Parents — evidence-based, judgment-free support

What does an IBCLC do?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant assesses latch, infant oral function, milk transfer, supply, and pumping. You’ll leave with a personalized care plan aligned to your goals—breastfeeding, pumping, combo-feeding, or weaning.

When should I book?

Prenatal for prevention; newborn weeks for latch or supply concerns; anytime for pain, weight questions, pumping, mastitis/plug duct prevention, bottle refusal, tongue/lip-tie questions, and return-to-work planning.

What happens during a visit?

History and goals, oral & latch assessment, weighted feed if indicated, pump & flange fitting, and a written plan the same day. With permission, we coordinate with your pediatrician and care team.

Do I need a problem to see an LC?

No—preventive coaching builds confidence and often avoids common feeding challenges.

Low supply or oversupply—can you help?

Yes. We optimize feeding patterns and milk removal, adjust pump settings, and address contributing factors. Strategies are always individualized.

Bottle refusal—what can we do?

We fine-tune nipple flow, pacing, timing, and technique, and create a gentle re-introduction plan that protects breastfeeding while helping baby accept a bottle.

What about tongue-tie or lip-tie?

We focus on function and feeding impact first, offer conservative strategies, and—if needed—refer for full evaluation so you can choose next steps with clarity and support.

Pumping hurts—is that normal?

Pain suggests fit or settings are off. Small flange-size changes and customized settings can make a big difference—comfort matters.

Do you offer home or virtual visits?

In-home visits are preferred for the most accurate assessment in your real feeding environment. Virtual

follow-ups, may be available; note that some insurers may not cover virtual.

Is lactation care covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. Insurance is verified via our unique links when possible; some plans reimburse
